Jimmy Carter, a third generation Californian born in the Hillcrest neighborhood, originally launched our location as an American eatery, with a second Mexican Café—inspired by his childhood visits to Ramona’s Kitchen in Old Town—on Washington Street. As time evolved, Jimmy merged the two menus, offering the ever-popular traditional American breakfasts alongside the authentic Mexican food dishes. Today, Jimmy Carter’s Mexican Café is a beloved mainstay in the Banker’s Hill/Hillcrest neighborhood with a dedicated family of loyal customers who return time and again to reunite with the staff and relish the food.
Jimmy’s San Diego roots run deep, fueling a passion for giving back to the community that raised him. With a personality as inviting and authentic as
his menu, he’s woven his restaurant into the fabric of San Diego for more than two decades. His long-time loyalty to local vendors sets him apart and his commitment to local organizations and the education of his employees makes him a cherished community partner and friend.
